Imagine a world without Arts and Entertainment

Any endeavor in life takes experience and knowledge. For the past five years we have interviewed thousands of truly gifted individuals and many of them lacked one key factor- the resources and circle of connections to support their dreams.  We used to say to those individuals, “Why swim with ducks, when you can soar with eagles.”

“Our concept is easy to master—Learn, perfect your ability and build relationships with those who can show you the way.”

At the same time we were saddened to see so many of these people spend hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars on products and services,  such as photos or classes, from companies all with good intentions, but that unfortunately could not guarantee success or even a shot at a legitimate job.  Thus you got just what you paid for– pictures and basic classes. So we asked, “What do the people with talent, looks and determination really need that’s not some false promise with a price tag to boot?

The Talent Academy was born.

A Star is Found Review by Alycia Kaback

Acting adviceAlycia Kaback believes A Star is Found: Our Adventures Casting Some of Hollywood’s Biggest Movies is truly a rarity among the pool of acting and Hollywood guides on the market– a expose which examines how actors are chosen and careers made, coming from two of the top casting directors in the business. Alycia Kaback always advises people to check their sources and you can’t get much more authoritative than Jane Jenkins and Janet Hirshenson. Few people are qualified to write a book detailing the casting process from before the script exists to the completion of a movie. Hirshenson and Jenkins exceed the requirement having worked with over a hundred movies and directors like Rob Reiner, Ron Howard, Steven Spielberg, Nancy Meyer and more.  The two review their craft, reflect on stars they’ve built, and offer tips and advice actors can use to catch attention of casting directors. A Star Is Found isn’t a tell-all book– it stays away from gossipy stories about actors. It sticks to facts and concrete advice. The authors mention a couple of negative incidences without naming names for the purpose of sharing what can and has happened and what shouldn’t be done.  This a true book for aspiring actors. Alycia Kaback would suggest it for anyone.

Alycia Kaback Reviews – Break into Modeling for Under $20

Alycia Kaback would like to start out with something that might be obvious to some of you– $20 is an under-exaggeration. Case in point- the book costs $15, leaving you with five measly bucks… not even enough to get you to New York City where it all begins.

There is definitely some advice to be taken from this book in terms of avoiding scams and rip-offs. It’s true–  you do not need to pay $8,000 to walk down a runway in order to be discovered.

However, the book falls short, giving you less than kosher advice, such as take your own photos at your house with your own camera.  You absolutely can not market yourself as a professional model who should be taken seriously by top agencies and casting directors with the photos your mom took. (Unless your mom shoots for Vanity Faire).   When you are starting out, you can’t do literally everything yourself.  Even if you do make the investment on professional photos and mail them to agencies, who’s to say anyone is looking at them? You are going to need help.

All in all, you have to take everything with a grain of salt as this book is prone to exaggeration. Unfortunately at the end of the day, it does take money to make money.  Follow this link to read tips on investing in your entertainment career by Alycia Kaback.

Alycia Kaback Reviews The Wilhelmina Guide to Modeling

Wilhelmina guide to modeling, Modeling book reviews Although authorship is attributed to Natasha Esch, the actual writing credit is given to C.L. Walker, who was a Wilhelmina model at the time. Because it is written first-hand by a working model, it gives a lot of detailed information on things you wouldn’t know unless you were a working  model.Walker’s writing is short and to the point, -without leaving anything out. It contains a sample letter you can send to the agencies and shows exactly what kind of pictures to send to the agencies, as well. How to dress. What make-up to wear (or not wear).

Alycia Kaback’s KMM Talent could benefit from this book as it contains information all types of modeling, not just on high fashion modeling.  If you are 5’2″, this book can still help you. In fact, there are people who have written thanking Wilhelmina because they didn’t realize they could model before reading this book.

Alycia Kaback loves her chapter on the foreign markets (London, Milan, Tokyo etc.) because she describes it exactly the way it is. In another favourite chapter of Alycia’s, you get to know how photografers, stylists and designers feel about models….and what they expect from us.

The problem is that a lot of the information is outdated.  There are large sections of the book you can just skip reading, like printing pictures and mailing them to agencies. No one does that anymore! After you take out all the old info, if you are able to parse it out, you might not be left with very much.  Alycia Kaback thinks it’s best to just stick with a more recent publication.

Posing Techniques for Photographing Model Portfolios

Modeling Advice, Posing AdviceAlycia Kaback knows you might have a pretty face, but unfortunately it doesn’t end there– what do you do once that pretty face is in front of the lens? Alycia Kaback has seen many models who appeared to be great models, but when it came time to snap the shots they just couldn’t deliver.   They may tense up, hold themselves stiffly, and create an awkward photograph.  Likely, they tense up because they are unsure of what to do. Even with a photographer who gives good direction, Alycia Kaback has seen a model frame after frame ruin the shot.  If this is the case for you, you may benefit from checking out the book “Posing Techniques for Photographing Model Portfolios” by Billy Pegram.  This book offers simple tricks of the trade will enable you to bring out the best in every picture. There is solid content and remarkable images . . .  While this book was originally written to help the photographer in posing models, a model could obviously read this and get something out of it.  Check it out.  Follow this link for more Alycia Kaback Modeling Advice.

The Professional’s Guide to Modeling by Roger Talley

modeling book reviewsAlycia Kaback refers young models and their moms to this book constantly. It is a one hundred percent bona fide guide to the industry, no song and dance, no smoke and mirrors just the facts of life in one of the toughest and most mis-understood and mis-represented businesses on the planet. What’s unique about this book is that it doesn’t just cover the NYC fashion world. That’s the problem with lots of books by supermodels and celebrity agency owners are their experience is a very narrow and often an outdated one that extremely few others could benefit from. This book deals with fashion and commercial modeling in both large and secondary markets. It clearly explains the differences too.

If you are looking to get into the modeling world I would get this book and really read it before you spend a dime on photos, comp cards, web site memberships, open calls, etc. It’s eloquently written, yet in a simple enough manner that ANYONE can understand it.

Model: The Ugly Business of Beautiful Women

safety modeling, modeling tipsIn this book Michael Gross writes a sensational book about the international modeling business—and its evil twin, legalized flesh peddling—Model is a tale of beautiful women empowered and subjugated; of vast sums of money; of sex and drugs, obsession and tragic death; and of the most unholy combination in commerce: stunning young women and rich, lascivious men.

While Alycia Kaback acknowledges that this type of illegal activity happens and is a real danger, the book focuses too much on negativity.  Michael Gross does not talk about tips and advice on being safe. The book seems as though it was designed to scare young women out of pursuing their true dreams, which is something Alycia Kaback would never stand behind.  Do not let fear hold you back, but please always be safe!

Debbie Press’s Your Modeling Career: You Don’t Have to Be a Superstar to Succeed

Tips for Models and Actors Books about Modeling sometimes tend to play to fantasies about making it big and becoming the next supermodel, but there are many models and actors who make a great living, but you would never know them by name.  They make enough money to work as a model or actor and not have a side job, but they are principal extras and are featured in ads and commercials.   It is obvious that not everyone can become a household name, but that does not mean you can’t experience success and stability in the entertainment industry.  Debbie Press provides solid advice about the business of modeling. Real-life examples illustrate how a “wanna be” can maximize his or her potential to succeed as a model.  However this book may focus a little too much on runway and editorial  modeling which is only 2% of the industry.  It is still a good read for anyone for motivational reasons, but lacks practical tips and advice for most people in the modeling industry. It is just very satisfying to see an author promote hard work and not the glamour. Alycia Kaback loves the photos; the book is beautiful.
